April 2011 Secondary Market Update

Hello Everyone!

Right now I am doing the dreadful task known as Saturday overtime. Basically I have to wake up at 5:30 AM after playing FNM until midnight just to sit around for 5 hours and do nothing. Yeah, I get 5 hours of paid overtime, but I value sleep higher than a couple extra bucks. To say the least I am the walking dead right now...

But enough of my complaining! Here's what you came to see (all prices TCG Player Medium, changes less than a Quarter are -0-):

Mirroden Beseiged

Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas          45.49  -4.91
Sword of Feast and Famine     25.74  +6.58
Thrun, the Last Troll                11.60  -4.32
Inkmoth Nexus                        11.00  -0.44
Blightsteel Colossus                 10.55  -0.91
Green Sun's Zenith                   7.91   -0.77
Hero of Oxid Ridge                  8.66   +0.76
Hero of Bladehold                    7.31   -0.30
Massacre Wurm                       4.72  -1.03
Consecrated Sphinx                 4.28   -0.40
Praetor's Council                      2.20    -0-

The prices on the Mirroden Beseiged cards have settled suprisingly fast, although we still have a good amount of action up top to keep an eye on. I think Sword of Feast and Famine is topping out right now, and may go down to 20 when Sword of War and Peace comes out in New Phyrexia. As for Tezzeret, I think he will drop down to 40, and then go back up again when the colorless Karn, Planeswalker is released. The original Karn creature card animated artifacts into creatures, and so we can expect similar artifact based abilities from the 'walker which will make him pals with Tezzy. Back when Thrun was released, I though it was an $8 card, and it's quickly looking that way after losing 1/4 of its value in the past month (which had lost 20% it's value from the month prior). My sleeper card in Massacre Wurm. I had a foil one, but have traded for 7 regular ones (1 French) at $3 a piece in the past 2 weeks. The card is at 5 now, but is definitely deserving of more. Unfortunately it appears the Titans are returning in 2012, so maybe this card will never see the light of day. Another card to keep an eye on is Consecrated Sphinx, BOD is testing the card out in RUG at a 1K this weekend, so I will have data up on that soon. Lastly, Blightsteel can only go down.

Scars of Mirroden

Koth of the Hammer                22.72    +0.36
Mox Opal                                22.25    +1.15
Sword of Body and Mind        13.42     +1.48
Venser, the Sojounor              13.17     -1.19
Elspeth Tirel                            12.49     -1.39
Skithryx, the Blight Dragon      10.50     +0.99
Wurmcoil Engine                      9.67      -0.60
Molten Tail Masticore              5.90      -1.69
Ratchet Bomb                          5.60        -0-
Lux Cannon                             3.18        -0-
Indominable Archangel             2.52        -0-
Platinum Emporion                    2.09        -0-
Mindslaver                               1.92        -0-
Geth, Lord of the Vault             1.46        -0-
Liege of the Tangle                    1.38       -0-
Quicksilver Gargantuan             1.00        -0-

Okay, theres actually stuff to discuss with Scars this month! First, Koth has found himself in another deck, which I actually want to try my hand at: mono-red control. It doesn't feel like a great deck, but it's interesting and different enough for me to want to play a few games with it. I think the highest Koth could absolutely possibly go is 25, but I don't see him breaking 23 very soon. Mox Opal, on the other hand, is a card you should definitely trade for whenever it's convenient. It's very Legacy playable (and in fact it's use in Legacy is what keeps pushing it's price up), and is the only Mox that doesn't require pitching other cards to use (Mox Diamond, Chrome Mox). In the absolute long run, Mox Opal is your money card from Scars. Sword of Body and Mind is another card that can retain Legacy value. The Darksteel Swords exploded in price last month, and now Fire/Ice is 49.61 and Light/Shadow is 33.21. I'm REALLY glad I bought the 2 at a total of 31 when I did! BAM has poor protection colors and the mill ability is actually more helpful than hurtful for your opponent in Legacy, so I can't see this card breaking 20 in the long run. It can probably ascend to 15 as Stoneforge continues to receive endless play, but that's what I would put as its reasonable maximum. Venser and Elspeth will probably slowly settle down to 11/12. I tried trading off my Molten-Tail Masticores at 3 during FNM, but the other guy didn't want them that high. Get rid of this card while you still can!

Magic 2011

Primeval Titan                 33.38  -5.26
Grave Titan                    16.84   -3.44
Baneslayer Angel            12.17   -0.96
Inferno Titan                   11.62  +4.49
Jace Beleran                    9.38   +0.29
Frost Titan                      8.88   -4.27
Garruk Wildspeaker        7.50    -0-
Fauna Shaman                 7.47   -0-
Sun Titan                         6.01   -0-
Knight Exemplar              5.72  -0.30
Ajani Goldmane               5.16   -0-
Lilliana Vess                    4.79    -0-
Gaea's Revenge               4.22  -0.60
Demon of Death's Gate   4.15  -1.24
Chandra Nalaar              2.98   -0-
Platinum Angel                2.40   -0-
Time Reversal                 1.37   -0-

I started doing these monthly financial updates for me so I could stay on top of my prices across the board, especially on cards that I'm not particularly thinking about. One thing that I have quickly learned is that month to month all of the titans (except Sun) have been going up and down deending on how the meta has shifted. In this month's edition, we see the dominance of Caw-Blade forcing the beaten-by-SoFF-Titans dropping dramatically while the Titan that ruins Caw-Blade's day going up by 50%. Frost Titan still sucks and keeps on losing value. If Valakut, the Molten Pinnical wasn't ever printed what do you think Primeval Titan would be worth? $5? It's a miserable card without Valakut. Next year in standard, the titans are probably getting reprinted, but Valakut is too unique of a card to get reprinted, so Primeval will stop seeing play overnight. In extended, Scapeshift is rotating out, so the deck loses their 1 card combo that wins the game by itself. The deck is considered a fringe deck right now, and losing an instant-win card doesn't make things better. I'm moving mine ASAP and you should too. As for Grave Titan, that card is still a 2-turn clock by itself, and UB Control will be a deck post rotation with Black Sun's Zenith, so I suggest trading for these at 15 and reaping the profits in a few months. I don't think Inferno Titan is going to hold it's lofty price for too long, and I would move these in about a month from now, when New Phyrexia gets released, and the Sorcery speed Titan can't deal with Sword of War and Peace. One thing to note, only the Grixis Titans have been displayed so far, and it's very possible for WotC to switch up the Green and White Titans, because they would never do that right?

Rise of the Eldrazi

Gideon Jura                             33.93  +5.01
Vengevine                               31.34   -2.86
Kargan Dragonlord                  11.78  -1.00
All Is Dust                               10.87  -1.68
Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre          10.80  -0-
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn         10.00  -0.52
Kozelik, the Butcher of Truth    9.97   -0-
Linvala, Keeper of Silence        7.79  +0.37
Sarkhan the Mad                     6.53  -0.48
Student of Warfare                  6.05    -0-
Nirkana Revenant                    5.32  +0.26
Lighthouse Chronologist           4.83   -0-
Khalni Hydra                           4.76   -0-
Transcendant Master               4.00   -0-
Inquisition of Kozelik                3.99
Hellcarver Demon                    0.95   -0-
Cast Through Time                  0.95   -0-

So as creatures gets better, so does Gideon Jura. Vengevine is seeing less play than he aught to as he is simply awesome right now. With the format so bent on killing creatures, Vengevine is a threat that must be killed, but at the same time, he never really dies. Speaking of Vengevine, I saw an elves player pitch a Vengevine to Fauana Shaman to grab a Khalni Hydra, play it for 2 and another creature to recur Vengevine. Khalni Hydra feels really good as a 1-of in Elves if your on the vine plan. Gideon is unplayable in Legacy, so he is going to lose value hard over the next couple years. I put him at 15-20 through extended and down to 8-10 after that. As for Vengevine, he has already wrecked people in Legacy once, and he will definitely be able to do it again. Vengevine is probably going to stay the most valuable card in the set in the long run. Emrakul is also very Legacy playable, so those are the cards you want to hold onto in the very long run.If you have any Kargan Dragonlords I would move them, and trade for all is Dust mad low, and then move it to casual players, especially people making colorless EDH decks. It's way too late in the game to get Gideon, but moving him isn't too bad of an option.

BREAKING NEWS!!!! Jace, the Mind Sculptor has GONE DOWN in value by 50 cents!!! The rampaging increase in prices has stopped, and people are rising from the rubble looking around at the desolated grounds they once called their wallet. It was a long, casualty loaded battle, but it's all over. For now. Yes, Jace the Mind Sculptor has actually gone down in value for the first time ever. I think this trend will continue, because no one plays extended, but he won't drop lower than 90, probably not even below 95. Then Legacy will hit, and people will try to find reasons to keep on playing him, but they will fail and his value will tank down to 60. Some people have said he is like Tarmogoyf, but I disagree, and the reasoning is in the upper-right corner of the card. Mana costs are simply too relevant in Legacy. When control decks are playing 21 lands because they only have 8 carsds that cost more than 2 while preventing you from casting spells from the rest of the game, and beatdown decks that play all 3/3s for 1 mana aren't considered powerful enough, you know you're dealing with a whole new beast. A 4 mana card draw spell just isn't where it's at. As for Stoneforge, it's too late to acquire them, but if you have any extra, it's not a bad idea to move them. If you have 4, just hang on to them because that deck is solid stupidly overpowered. Also, I would move any extra Creeping Tar Pits that you may have.

Shocker, I tell you Fetches are going up, and they do. For some reason everyone I trade with is absolutely convinced that fetches are worth 10 a piece, so I'm raking in the fetches whenever they come by. Seriously, they're going to all be worth 15+ eventually. As this is one of the sets that is being shipped off to the eternal doom that is Extended come fall, there are a lot of cards to move, starting with Eldrazi Monument. I just moved this to my small cards binder simply because I want to move them that bad. Another card to move is Nissa Revane. She is a planeswalker, so that holds her value up in the casual world regardless (a planeswalker at camp is greater then gold). But she will drop to 7. Sorin Markov is a card I have people talking about in UB Control, and it feels incredibly good to me. Against aggro (everyone minus Valakut) you can pick off their creatures while gaining life and giving Sorin more loyalty. Against control and Valakut you can Mindslaver them and have them kill themselves. I have been on the losing end of a Mindslaver before, and I have seen it happen enough times to know it is simply backbreaking. All those Tectonic Edges you have? They just betrayed you. Those counterspells? Yeah, those are all gone too. Doom Blade my own creature, don't mind if I do! Missing triggers? Why Not! If he picks up, you may see a bump in price. Otherwise, he will probably go down a little when he is reprinted/rotates out of Standard. I just easily traded for a set of Bloodghast at 7 a piece. I think that's a good indication of how unpopular Vampires is right now, and how everyone is trying to move it.

That's all for Standard stuff, but since I love Legacy so much, I'm going to put up a bunch of Legacy cards that you should keep your eye on:

Sensei's Divining Top  18.38
Force of Will  81.59
Lion's Eye Diamond  40.80
Thoughtseize 23.09
Counterbalance  9.05

Scrubland  52.64
Taiga  67.93
Underground Sea  120.85
Tundra  87.69
Savannah  62.20
Badlands  56.52
Plateau  45.50
Volcanic Island  68.81
Bayou  69.42
Tropical Island  99.67

Holy crap! Underground Sea, Tundra, and Tropical Island are all exploding in price! That along with Force of Will makes blue a dradful color to break into.

Anyways, I actually have something to do at work, so I must go for now. Until next time, stay classy!
