February 2011 Secondary Market Update

Hello everyone! I hope you had a superfantastic start to the new year, but now we move on to February, which I don't mind because it means we're almost done with winter. Although for those living in New England like me, there's no end in sight. In fact the only that is in sight is 7 foot tall snow banks surroundign your house. But I digress, let's crunch some numbers! As always, these are the TCG Player's medium price, and any change less than a quarter will be noted as -0-. Also, I will include a couple notable rares among the mythics that trade for a lot of value.

Mirroden Beseiged

Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas        30.59
Thrun, the Last Troll              18.97
Blightsteel Colossus               13.45
Sword of Feast and Famine   11.36
Inkmoth Nexus                      11.24
Green Sun's Zenith                 9.76
Hero of Bladehold                 9.15
Massacre Wurm                    7.94
Hero of Oxid Ridge               5.94
Consecrated Sphinx               5.26
Praetor's Council                   3.18

One thing I like about Mirroden Beseiged is that there is no outright crap Mythic rare. It's obvious that Praetor's Council is the weakest of them all (and in the most awkward color for its ability), but it will probably get you $2 over the course of time. As we clearly saw with Scars of Mirroden, all of these prices will go down to some degree. My sleeper cards are the Consecrated Sphinx and the Hero of Bladehold. I think both of these cards are actually better than people seem to think. Hero of Oxid Ridge puts RDW over the top by powering through walls and putting control decks under an uncomfortable amount of pressure. Consecrated Sphinx is also awesome! Want to make a budget control deck with insane card advantage? Get Sphinx in play next to Jace Beleran and just +2 Jace all day. You will draw 6 cards to your opponent's 2 over the course of each pair of turns. Draw for turn, draw off Jace, draw 2 because your opponent draws off Jace, draw 2 when your opponent starts their turn. If you lose when drawing 6 by the time you untap every turn, you deserve it. Thrun will dro by half then come back up to 14. Tezzeret will also feel an initial drop as no one knows what to do with him. I pick him to go to 20. Massacre Wurm feels much weaker than Grave Titan, but will be awesome if the Titans aren't reprinted in M12.

Scars of Mirroden

Koth of the Hammer            25.19     -2.72

Venser, the Sojounor           16.68    -1.99
Mox Opal                            15.50   -1.20
Elspeth Tirel                         14.61   -1.20
Wurmcoil Engine                 10.50     -0.58
Molten Tail Masticore          10.38   -3.35
Sword of Body and Mind      9.98      -0-
Skithryx, the Blight Dragon    9.45    -0.42
Lux Cannon                           3.31   -0.42
Indominable Archangel          2.92    -0.37
Platinum Emporion                 2.11     -0-
Mindslaver                            1.88      -0-
Geth, Lord of the Vault          1.80     -0.28
Liege of the Tangle                1.64      -0-
Quicksilver Gargantuan          1.21      -0-

Everything just keeps going down, and rthe most valuable rare doesn't break the $5 mark (dual lands). Overall you can see the changes in price getting smaller and smaller as 1/3 wer less than a quarter, and another 5 were between a quarter and a dollar. Overall, I expect this to all settle very soon, unless RDW takes off at which point Koth may go up as well. Venser did get an awesome new target with Spine of Ish Sah, but UB just got far better with Go for the Throat and Black Sun's Zenith that I think UW will be obsolete for the short term.

M11

Primeval Titan                  38.99    -0.58
Grave Titan                     22.14     -0.29
Frost Titan                      15.45    -2.02
Baneslayer Angel            13.68     -0.63
Fauna Shaman                 7.71
Inferno Titan                    7.60     -0.40
Garruk Wildspeaker       7.57        -0-
Jace Beleran                    9.11    +1.73
Knight Exemplar             6.54
Sun Titan                        6.45     +0.30
Demon of Death's Gate   5.61      -0-
Ajani Goldmane              5.06     +0.35
Gaea's Revenge              4.98     +0.28
Lilliana Vess                   4.84      +0.63
Chandra Nalaar              3.03      -0-
Platinum Angel               2.40       -0-
Time Reversal                1.61       -0-

If you invested in Frost Titan when he was $7 you won. If you invested in him at $20 you lost. If you invested in Knight Exemplar at $3 you won. I got 8 at $5 each al in trades, and I may just cash in now. Jace Beleran just keeps on going up which is interesting as beatdown i now a viable strategy and Beleran pales in comparasin to Mind Sculptor in terms of battlefield control. Not being able to unsummon a threat is huge, and as such moving Jace at 9 seems worth it. On another note, Liliana Vess has risen from $3 to 5 since October, and I have no idea why, but every month she has gone up 50 or 60 cents.

Rise of the Eldrazi

Vengevine                                34.40     -0.78
Gideon Jura                             21.29     +0.56
All Is Dust                               13.70      -0-
Kargan Dragonlord                  13.60    -0.70
Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre          10.96   +0.53
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn          10.62   +1.00
Kozelik, the Butcher of Truth    9.94    +0.84
Linvala, Keeper of Silence       7.18     +0.67
Sarkhan the Mad                     7.01      -0-
Nirkana Revenant                    4.94    +0.62
Khalni Hydra                           4.35    +0.52
Lighthouse Chronologist          4.31     +0.60
Transcendant Master               3.96      -0-
Hellcarver Demon                   1.00      -0-
Cast Through Time                 0.94       -0-

It's interesting how Rise is the only set so far to have almost everything going up. 5 cards are stable, 2 are down, and 8 are up (although by only 50 cents to a dollar). Obviously, the cards to watch are Vengevine and Gideon Jura as they are the face of Gx Beatdown decks and UW Control.

Worldwake

Jace, the Mind Sculptor     96.67   +1.70
Abyssal Persecutor            14.64   -0.63
Avenger of Zendikar          13.21   +0.85
Eye of Ugin                       3.61        -0-
Dragonmaster Outcast       3.98     +0.49
Omnath, Locus of Mana    3.61     +0.28
Admonition Angel              2.76       -0-
Comet Storm                    2.05       -0-
Novablast Wurm               1.29       -0-
Wrexial, the Risen Deep    1.29       -0-

It's unfortunate to know that Jace getting more expensive isn't news. However, I think Persecutor could take off using Go For the Throat like I talked about yesterday. Avenger is only used in ramp decks which are going to be made even more obselete (although Slagstorm is a great pickup for them), so I'm glad I just moved my 3 Avengers that I bought back in the day at 9 each at 13 a pop. Also, you know what a great card to equip Sword of Feast and Famine is? Omnath =D

Zendikar

Lotus Cobra                           17.79     +0.43

Eldrazi Monument                   15.25     -0.90
Sorin Markov                         12.37     +1.01
Scalding Tarn                          12.64
Verdant Catacombs                12.15
Misty Rainforest                      11.68
Arid Mesa                              11.36
Marsh Flats                             10.82
Bloodghast                             10.09
Nissa Revane                          9.67        +0.25
Goblin Guide                           8.66
Iona, Shield of Emeria             6.48       +0.42
Chandra Ablaze                      4.26       +0.54
Felidar Sovereign                    4.09       +0.38
Ob Nixilis, the Fallen               3.04         -0-
Warren Instigator                    2.90         -0-
Mindbreak Trap                     2.79        +0.31
Rampaging Baloths                 2.51         -0-
Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet     2.23       +0.26
Obsidian Fireheart                  1.35         -0-
Eternity Vessel                       0.97         -0-
Lorthos, the Tidemaker          0.82         -0-

Well, if you want to open some sweet Mythics in Zendikar, you're doing it wrong. The money is in the fetch lands. As I mentioned before, the fetch lands are actually better in legacy than any other format. I can remember a couple months ago Marsh Flats going for $8. Now it's 10. The only other cards to compare this to is the Onslaught fetches, whose prices are:

Poluteded Delta (UB)       24.40
Flooded Strand (UW)      20.05
Windswept Heath (GW)   17.78
Wooded Foothills (RG)    17.01
Bloodstained Mire (RB)   15.14

I obviously don't know what these prices were back in the day, but I can imagine these prices have only appreciated as Legacy has gotten more popular recently. My Reanimator deck is UBg, but I run Verdant and Misty simply because that's what I have and it works just as well. As Legacy gets more popular I expect these will continue to rise as their demand will go up when people don't want to pay for the older and harder to find ones. I just traded for another 6 of these at 10 each, so I am very glad with those acquisitions. I think it is time to sell the Bloodghasts you may have as it can't possibly go up, and vampires is soon to be outclassed by other beatdown decks. Goblin Guide is a card that I also will retain value in the long term, while Monument will only hold casual value and Cobra won't be this valuable forever. I just traded my set of Cobra for a pair of Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas (now I have 3) and an Elspeth Tirel, which gained me $5 based on current prices, but I think Cobra will go down eventually while Tezz will retain value over the long term.

That is all for today, until next time stay classy!
