Hello Everyone!
As Dark Ascension comes closer and closer to its official release, I have been thinking a lot about where Burning Vengeance can go from here. Clearly the deck can be good, however it struggled to keep up with the high impact tempo-oriented metgame. I don't know how Dark Ascension will change the metagame overall, although cards like Grafdiggers cage are going to be a thorn in our sides.
Regardless, I don't know where, but I was thinking about doing something drastic and not play blue in this deck that so many people want to just make straight UR. The theory is that instead of drawing infinite cards, we will be able to play a ton of cards that effect the board that gain incremental value. My new line of thinking was absolutely influenced by seeing this amazing deck. Basically you dredge/discard a Haakon into your graveyard, and then cast it, which allows you to cast nameless inversion from your graveyard. Just those 2 cards together is a killing machine, but when you add a Burning Vengeance or 2, you also have a blisteringly fast win condition.
By not playing blue, we lose Snapcaster Mage, counterspells, think twice, and a couple flashbacks (though we may play Desperate Ravings still). Frankly, we only ever wanted Snapcaster for the counterspells, which aren't too good right now anyways, so it's perfectly fine in my book. Also, think twice literally does nothing. It's just a mana-specific cycling that you can flash back. Here's my initial thoughts at the deck:
4x Liliana of the Veil
4x Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
2x Gideon Jura
1x Wurmcoil Engine
4x Burning Vengeance
2x Burning Oil
3x Geistflame
1x Devil's Play
4x Faithless Looting
4x Lingering Souls
1x Sever the Bloodline
1x Shattered Perception
1x Increasing Devotion
2x Whipflare
2x Day of Judgement
4x Blackcleave Cliffs
4x Isolated Chapel
4x Clifftop Retreat
4x Evolving Wilds
3x Mountain
3x Swamp
2x Plains
Sideboard options:
Ratchet Bomb
Ray of Revelation (will need adjusted manabase)
Ancient Grudge (will need adjusted manabase)
Timely Reinforcements
Elesh Norn
Sun Titan
Grave Titan
Doom Blade/GffT
Nihil Spellbomb
Oblivion Ring
This deck is still fairly raw, but I like the direction it's headed in. Having 10 planeswalkers makes this deck very interesting in that it gains significant advantages every single turn that passes in addition to the shenanegans that BV causes. While I did initially dismiss it, Lingering Souls is SWEET in this deck. First off, it only costs 2 to flashback, so it makes it easier to flashback a ton of cards in 1 turn to burn a player/creature out with BV. Also, it affects the board, so it really helps buy us more time to develop our plan and get our 'walkers online. One card that seems especially sweet as a cute 1-of in this deck is Shattered Perception. Another card I initially dismissed, this seems like it can lead to some amazing games where you can keep a hand of something like 3x land, Shattered Perception, Burning Vengeance, 2 flashback spells. and set up some amazing plays with the turn 4 perception drawing basically anything because you discarded gas in addition to drawing several other cards.
One thing that is important to note is that we are *tears up* not getting any more flashback spells in Avacyn Restored. I conveniently can't find the article, but I believe Mark Rosewater was all like "flashback don't make sense flavor-wise, so we don't need it in Avacyn Restored!" And now we get no more fun toys. Honestly, I really don't know why they need a large set to finish off innistrad block. How is Avacyn returning (speculations on that later) worth a large set, while Phyrexia winning the war over Mirrodin and changing the face of the plane, in addition to how mana works, not?
Regardless, with some tuning I can see some merit to this deck going forwards! Until next time, stay classy!

Dark Decks: Undying Pod
Hello everybody!
So an hour ago, I was not expecting to be writing this article. However, When I came into toys and saw John making a Birthing Pod deck, I helped him make some finishing touches, and we played a few games. As it turns out, Birthing Pod + Undying = Aggro as piss! Here's the deck we wound up putting together:
4x Birds of Paradise
2x Young Wolf
3x Strangleroot Geist
2x Viridian Elf
3x Blade Splicer
2x Fiend Hunter
2x Solemn Simulacrum
1x Phyrexian Metamorph
1x Hero of Bladehold
2x Acidic Slime
1x Voropede
1x Archon of Justice
1x Wurmcoil Engine
1x Sun Titan
1x Elesh Norn
4x Birthing Pod
2x Garruk Relentless
3x Green Sun's Zenith
4x Razorverge Thicket
4x Sunpetal Grove
2x Gavony Township
6x Plains
8x Forest
Birthing Pod is a very awesome strategy that honestly I'm surprised isn't more popular right now. With a Birthing Pod in play, EVERY SINGLE CREATURE is a must answer or die card! We wanted to keep our mana simple and just play 2 colors because Strangleroot Geist at GG and Fiend Hunter at 1WW and Voropede at 2GGG can't ever be in the same deck as Skaab Ruinator at 1UU or Skinrender at 2BB. Besides, this deck is already pretty good, why mess up what already works?
Basically, Strangleroot Geist is stupidly good! In case you didn't realize, this guy is going to kick your face in if you aren't prepared. Playing against him made me realize how bad it is to be a control player right now. Now only is there no great control cards, but even if there was, Undying laughs at you, and you have to play cards like Grafdigger's Cage just to make things get back to being fair, at which point you still have to make sure you can stabilize.
But not just Strangelroot Geist is sick, Young Wolf and Voropede are ballers too! I'm honestly very excited about this deck, and would honestly consider playing it at some future FNM. Just play dudes, swing, and then upgrade into a bigger scarier dude. That's how we play!
That's all I have for today, until next time, stay classy!

Dark Decks: All of the Tokens!
Hello everyone!
Everyone is anticipating a tokens deck to be a deck as soon as Sorin and Lingering Souls get printed. So I am going to share 3 decklists today! Straight Wb tokens, and then Wb splashing blue and splashing green:
White/Black:
3x Fiend Hunter
4x Champion of the Parish
4x Hero of Bladehold
4x Doomed Traveler
4x Intangible Virtue
2x Oblivion Ring
1x Go for the Throat
4x Lingering Souls
3x Increasing Devotion
4x Gather the Townsfolk
4x Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
3x Vault of the Archangel
4x Isolated Chapel
4x Evolving Wilds
10x Plains
2x Swamp
Sideboard:
4x Stony Silence
4x Celestial Purge
4x Timely Reinforcements
3x Leonin Relic-Warder
Black/White/Green:
2x Doomed Traveler
4x Champion of the Parish
2x Hero of Bladehold
4x Mayor of Avabruck
2x Fiend Hunter
2x Geist Honored Monk
3x Garruk Relentless
4x Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
4x Intangible Virtue
2x Oblivion Ring
2x Lingering Souls
4x Gather the Townsfolk
2x Beast Within
2x Gavony Township
4x Isolated Chapel
4x Evolving Wilds
4x Plains
1x Swamp
1x Forest
1x Razorverge Thicket
4x Sunpetal Grove
2x Vault of the Archangel
Sideboard:
4x Stony Silence
4x Celestial Purge
4x Timely Reinforcements
3x Fresh Meat
Black/White/Blue
2x Doomed Traveler
4x Delver of Secrets
2x Geist of Saint Traft
4x Drogskol Captain
2x Midnight Haunting
4x Lingering Souls
4x Vapor Snag
4x Mana Leak
4x Ponder
3x Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
4x Intangible Virtue
2x Vault of the Archangel
4x Isolated Chapel
4x Evolving Wilds
4x Plains
1x Swamp
1x Moorland Haunt
1x Island
2x Seachrome Coast
4x Glacial Fortress
Sideboard:
4x Stony Silence
4x Timely Reinforcements
3x Oblivion Ring
4x Celestial Purge
All of these lists are a little rough naturally, but I can see potential with all of them. I get the feeling that the blue splash makes the deck go smaller, staying BW is mid-sized, and then going with a green splash makes you bigger. Obviously a lot more testing is needed to make them optimal, but I don't actually think any one deck is strictly inferior to the others. The Stoney Silences in the sideboard are there specifically for Ratchet Bomb, which simply ruins a token maker's day.
That's all I have for today! Until next time, stay classy!

Dark Decks: Dredge
Hello everyone!
Ever since Innistrad came out, people have been casually talking about a UG mill yourself deck, but the deck never took off. However, in Dark Ascension, we have some awesome new enablers, so the deck might turn out to be a possibility!
4x Birds of Paradise
4x Llanowar Elves
4x Screeching Skaab
4x Splinterfright
3x Kessig Cagebreakers
4x Forbidden Alchemy
3x Mulch
4x Tracker's Instincts
1x Gnaw to the Bone
4x Thought Scour
3x Postmortem Lunge
4x Hinterland Harbor
3x Woodland Cemetery
1x Swamp
4x Island
6x Forest
4x Evolving Wilds
Sideboard:
3x Aether Adept
2x Skaab Ruinator
1x Spider Spawning
4x Mental Misstep
3x Gnaw to the Bone
2x Naturalize
This deck is a ton of fun to play, however the major thing holding it back is that it's a non-interactive glass cannon. A timely Doom Blade or Vapor Snag can stop you on your critical turn, and we don't have much to slow down the opponents with. Also, with only 7 real threats in the deck, this deck is a durdling champion!
I personally won't be sleeving this deck up any time soon, although if I were to, this is definitely where I would start. But that's all I have time for today! Until next time, stay classy!

Dark Decks: Zombies
Hello Everyone!
Wizards of the Coast just spoiled the entirety of Dark Ascension, which you can find here! Naturally as I was looking at the set, I had my head in the brewery the whole time thinking which cards could do best in almost any deck. Over the course of this week, I will be posting several raw decklists as I think of them that could become viable in the post-Dark Ascension Standard. To start things off, let's take a look a look at the next potential Zombies deck!
4x Gravecrawler
4x Diregraf Ghoul
4x Highborn Ghoul
2x Walking Corpse
4x Geralf's Messenger
4x Cemetery Reaper
4x Diregraf Captain
2x Despise
3x Distress
2x Tragic Slip
1x Go for the Throat
4x Liliana of the Veil
14x Swamp
4x Darkslick Shores
4x Drowned Catacombs
Sideboard options:
Curse of Death's Hold
Ratchet Bomb
Nihil Spellbomb
Skinrender
Vapor Snag
Phyrexian Crusader
Mana Leak
Ghoulraiser
When Gravecrawler was spoiled, I started getting very excited at the possibility of a very aggressive mono-black deck emerging with 8 2/x 1 drops! Unfortunately, the deck is a little lacking in the 2 drop slot - we have a bear, and an intimidate bear..... cool.... However, at 3 mana the deck is busting at the seams with good stuff! 8 Lords? Liliana? Anti-Kitchen Finks? Because of the 16 quality 3 drops, I made a point to have the rest of the deck be focused at maximizing value from the 1 and 2 drop slots. 3 spot removal + 4 liliana may be a little too low on the removal spectrum, but this deck seems like it should be the beatdown in most matchups. Also, 5 discard spells may not be what we want, but this is what I intuitively feel is correct, and I will let testing take it from there.
The sideboard is not worth putting specific numbers into yet, simply because we don't know what decks need to be sideboarded against yet! However, I wanted to pull cards that have potential depending on where the meta goes. BW/x tokens is looking to be a popular archaetype, so we have Ratchet Bomb and Curse of Death's Hold for the tokens. In an attrition based match, Ghoulraiser can help us get ahead of the 1-for-1s. In a tempo based match, Skinrender and Vapor Snag are our friends. Against control, Mana Leak will help us counter their trump card and give us just enough time to finish them off (although is should be noted that with Gravecrawler, Geralf's Messenger, and Cemetery Reaper, we might simply not care about Day of Judgement at all!). Nihil Spellbomb seems better than Grafdigger's Cage to me because it doesn't hurt your own grave recursion, and the spellbomb draws a card. And finally, Phyrexian Crusader seems good against RDW or against a humans deck.
That's all I have for today! Stay tuned, as I wouldn't be surprised if I churned out new decks every day! Until next time, stay classy!

Standard Rocks!
Hello Everyone!
Yesterday, a wave of cards were spoiled, and among them included this card:
Grim Backwoods
Land
Tap: Add 1 to your mana pool
2GB Tap Sacrifice a Creature: Draw a Card
At first I was like - meh, but then I thought about its potential applications and I was like
Lands that draw you cards? Yeah! Lands that trigger death on command? Yeah! Sign me up!
The first thing that come into my http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=1527297850651993869mind when thinking about the applications for this card was Glissa, the Traitor + Solemn Simulacrum. With the 3 cards in play you can sacrifice the Solemn to draw 2 cards, and then when a creature dies on your side of the field (maybe because of that Doom Blade you just drew) you get the Solemn back in hand, which will then allow you to replay it and get tons of value.
A few weeks ago I was working with Defo on a GB Smallpox deck, and I think this card would work fantastically in that deck! Using creatures like Perilous Myr and Viridian Emissary that gain additional value when they die is huge with Grim Backwoods, and Perilous Myr + Glissa is just amazing!
The deck is still rough, but this is how I would build it post Dark Ascension:
4x Perilous Myr
4x Viridian Emissary
4x Glissa, the Traitor
4x Solemn Simulacrum
4x Bloodgift Demon
2x Despise
4x Tragic Slip
2x Smallpox
4x Liliana of the Veil
4x Garruk Relentless
4x Woodland Cemetery
3x Grim Backwoods
10x Swamp
7x Forest
Some other cards to consider for the deck include Beast Within, Mimic Vat, Ratchet Bomb, Acidic Slime, Distress, and Doom Blade/GftT. Depending on where the metagame goes, I can see this deck being very good as it should have a very good matchup against creature heavy decks like BWx tokens and Wx Humans. I don't see any cards in the Dark Ascension that seem like they would be a good in Delver decks, although Gather the Townfolk seems like a natural fit into the Sam Black Champion of the Parish + Delver of Secrets deck. I can't really tell where the metagame is going to go specifically (although I can't possibly see control stepping up right now), but I think playing the rock could be a very good idea going forwards!
When I actually test this deck I will be able to offer updates and improvements, but I think this is a good starting place! Because of all the aggro in the format right now, Dismember loses a lot of value, so our Bloodgift Demon should be remotely safe.
That's all I have for today! Over the next week I will be constantly posting up decklists and new ideas periodically all the way through the actual release of DKA. But until next time, stay classy!

Flowing down the Magical River
Hello everyone!
So when it comes to learning more about magic, we tend to look to the professional players for insight and guidence on everything from what deck to play to what card is the best first pick out of any pack. Every once and a while I will hear of someone who has been playing since the inception of magic talk about how he remembers back when there was nothing except for a monthly "The Duelist" magazine to read and learn more about magic from. Also, there was no price guides except for the monthly "Scrye" magazine, which naturally was always outdated. It's been called the Wild West days of magic.
Nowadays information is absolutely viral. Articles, like this one, are the most traditional form of strategy guides, however over the past couple years videos have been getting more and more popular. When ChannelFireball started a couple years ago, their angle (besides having LSV) was that they were going to have lots of MTGO videos for a new way of learning about magic.
Since then the idea has grown and spread across to all major websites and you can now expect to get videos every day! Drafting, Standard, Modern, and Legacy are all covered! I too would make videos, but I don't know what software is required to make them.... In addition to videos, there are even podcasts that you can listen to passively and pick up unique little nuggets of information from.
So you would think that there isn't many other places to go, right? No! In fact, there is a new realm of strategy "articles" that is very quickly becoming more and more popular, and that is streaming!
Streaming basically is when someone sets up a camera to display their computer screen and play it out live online. The most popular website to stream on is twitch, and now that I think about it I honestly don't know any other websites that you can stream on.... GGS Live is used by Wizards and and Star City to stream their events, but I don't think you can stream your MTGO games on it.... Regardless, there are a few notable players who do stream like AJ Sacher, Brian Kibler, Tom Martel, and Brad Nelson.
AJ seems to stream almost every night, and the others also stream very frequently. Over the past month, I have seen the popularity of the streams increase dramatically as you can see there are often 250-350 people watching them each time. Watching the stream is awesome because there's a chat next to the video so you can interact with the person streaming in addition to discussing the best next play. Also, it feels cool getting to chat with your pro player of choice between rounds.
Last night, Brad Nelson and Tom Martel were both streaming the same 8-4 draft at the same time, and they had a bet saying whoever didn't get as far in that draft would have to stream an M12 draft. To complete the irony, they actually played against eachoter round 1! So I put both streams on at the same time and left both soudns on. They each primarily talked only on their turn, so they never really talked over eachother too, so it was awesome getting to see how they each were thinking and playing around the other's stuff (and acurately reading the other's tells!). In the end Tom Martel won 2-1, but I had to get some sleep before Nelson cashed in on the bet.
There is a dark side to streaming though, and that is called ghosting. Ghosting is when you play against someone who yo know is streaming, so you watch their stream and see what is in their hand. From time to time you will see someone play around things or make attacks they normally wouldn't unless they were ghosting and they tend to get called out. Don't be that guy - don't ghost.
All in all, Streaming is awesome because its a different way to consume magic without actually playing it that does have a different feel from just watching traditional videos or reading articles. They are different every day, and are almost always accessible in the evening.
That's all I have for today! Until next time, stay classy!

So when it comes to learning more about magic, we tend to look to the professional players for insight and guidence on everything from what deck to play to what card is the best first pick out of any pack. Week 2 Spoilers!
Hello Everyone!
I haven't been keeping up with the spoilers over the last few days, so I have 9 cards to discuss today! So instead of wasting time coming up with a warm intro, let's just get right down to business!
Wow! Now we basically have 2 sets of Midnight Haunting that we can put in our decks! People were already talking about maybe building around Sorin for a BW tokens deck, but this card further solidifies that idea! I personally am going to design WGb tokens, using Garruk and Gavony Township, but that's not going up until the weekend. I really like how this card actually costs LESS to flashback, just like Unburial Rites did. Also cool to point out is that this card is part of the opposite cycle from Innistrad. In innistrad there were 2 cycles of flashback cards that flashbacked for different colors of mana. At common, we had the ones with an ally colored flashback (Ancient Grudge, Bump in the Night, Feeling of Dread, Forbidden Alchemy, Travel Preparations) and uncommon we had enemy colored flashbacks (Spider Spawning, Memory's Journey, Rally the Peasants, Unburial Rites, Desperate Ravings). Now we have 2 cycles but the flashbacks are going the other direction. We already say Ray of Revelation last week which is evidence of both cycles. You know what that means? Burning Vengeance gets new toys! Obviously this won't go in that deck, but soon other cards will!
And going from comparisons to Ravnica cycles, we move to comparisons against Lorwyn tribal. In Lorwyn, we had a smattering of uncommon lords (most famously Merrow Reejery), and it seems we're moving in that direction in Dark Ascension too. We already saw Immerwolf last week, but Stromkirk captain is much better! I will always take First Strike, as it can REALLY mess up your opponent's day when they are anticipating trading with your entire board, and instead they get nothing. Lord effects like this is the only thing that will get the tribes to become actual contenders in the competitive scene, and don't forget about Adaptive Automaton! Maybe there is come hope for some awesome tribal decks to surface.....
And speaking of Vampire tribal, check out this bad ass! He is very vulnerable on his first attack, however after that, you don't want to get in a Duel with the Blademaster! After one swing, he even trades with Titans! This is clearly going to be a centerpiece in any BR Vampires deck going forwards, as even completely by himself he deals:
t4: 2 damage
t5: 6 damage
t6: 10 damage
So he kills before the opponent can even land their titan! Now obviously the challenge is to simply ensure he lives until that first swing gets in... the same problem we face with Falkenrath Marauders, and frankly the trick with the whole vampire tribe. But once we overcome that, we have a beater!
Since I don't feel like switching off red for a minute, let's talk about Nicholas Cage! I can see it now, Eric Klug in a month's time with have an alter out of this card with something like this on it. The original art even sets itself up to be a Ghost Rider reference! But anyways, the best card to compare this to is Hero of Oxid Ridge. Both give your team 1 bonus damage per attacker, and both hit for 4 by themself off a 2RR haste body. The only differences are tribal, 3 vs 4 power (when it comes to getting blocked), and 2 vs 3 toughness. Also, Hero has the unblockability clause. I think for right now, Hero is simply a better card, but once the set rotates (and even in block)GhostHellrider will be very heavily used, and his price will ascend to reflect that. Hellrider is currently pre-selling at 2, and I think it will be at 4 in about 9 months once Hero is out of the picture.
One last red card to get these Devilish thoughts out of my mind. Flayer screams combo at me! However, I need to point out first that this card doesn't work in Dredge... the Bridge tokens come into play before the Dread return finishes resolving, and even if it worked the other way around, the tokens aren't coming from the graveyard. What this DOES work with though is Gravecrawler, Skaab Ruinator, Shards block Unearth cards, and everything Undying/Persist. I get the feeling there could very easily be a combo where you use a card like Disciple of Grislebrand to sacrifice Undying creatures and burn your opponent for an insane amount completely out of nowhere! The only problem with the combo is that its build around a 6 mana creature, which makes it very slow.....
Speaking of 6 mana undying creatures, how awesome is Mikaeus?! I can't wait to play him in my zombies deck! Oh wait.... we could just play Grave Titan, couldn't we? Man.... Titans really make everything suck. Well, considering if WotC brings titans back in M13 there will be a major revolt of nerds storming the castle, I can safely say that this time next year Mikaeus may finally see play! That being said, he is awesome in limited, and I really hope to open him at the pre-release and build a buck black kick in the teeth deck with my other BBB bomb being Reaper of the Abyss. Also, what if you open Mikaeus the Lunarch and Mikaeus the Unhallowed? Are you even allowed to run both in the same deck? That just breaks all rules of flavor! What if you have both in play? Technically they don't have the same name so you could! This is just all wrong! #flavordraft
Some people have been talking about how awesome this card is, but I must disagree.... Why not just chump block with your Fortress Crab until turn 8? Obviously this guy is good with Galvanic Juggernaut, but GGG is pretty hard to do by turn 3. This is no Leatherback Baloth. Besides, you could even choose to not block and he's basically Stromkirk Noble, except 2 turns late...Maybe it's because I don't like Adam Styborski's articles, but I'm just not feeling the Ooze.
Last, and absolutely not least, we find ourselves in dire need of the Orkin man (btw, they have hilarious commercials!). When I first saw the art for the card I assumed it would have haste and trample, but vigilance is still good.... even if it doesn't make sense... Regardless, I can see this card actually seeing play in a G/x stompy deck. Maybe it's a GSZ target in Wolf Run if you don't want to get an Acidic Slime? This card seems to fit very well into their game plan of "every single card in my deck can and will kill you". Just having more trample fatties is sweet for that deck as they can just attack you with 3 dudes with Wolf Run up, and no matter which one you block, you're still in a losing situation! This guy is very exciting, although because of Sorin, it will be hard for Mythics to take off in value from this set.
That's all I have for today! I'm finally caught up with the spoilers thus far, but there's so many awesome cards, especially form the cycles, that I'm looking forward towards! Just 10 more days until the pre-release, I can't wait to get my hands on some new horrors! Until next time, stay classy!

Speaking of Cycles, check out this land! Obviously every was going OMG BW Tokens when this came out, which I don't disagree with, but I'm not too enthused by this card either. Enemy colored mana just isn't that good, and adding colorless lands to the mix doesn't solve that problem. Sure we can play Ghost Quarter and Shimmering Grotto to solve our problems, but then were stone raining ourselves to fix our terrible mana... Regardless, this card is cool and I'm really excited to see what the UR land will do in particular, though I'm sure the rest will be cool too. One thing we can compare these rare lands to is their uncommon counterparts from Ravnica block. My, how much more powerful these are!

Ascending Dredge
Hello everybody!
You know what I love? Combo decks!
You know what I hate? Overextending and getting blow out of the game.
Sadly, these 2 more often than not coincide with each other. Obviously the plan is to usually just play around everything, but sometimes you're facing lethal damage next turn vs Merfolk or Bant and you simply have to hope they don't have the Force of Will as you try to go off with your storm deck.
But a deck that can very easily overextend more than storm is dredge, and sometimes there's almost nothing the player can do about it! Breakthrough for 0? Now you have overextended, and may lose on the next turn by their 0 land Tormod's Crypt hand. Nevermind the rest of their deck.... However Dark Ascension is here for the rescue! 2 cards in particular have piqued my interest from the set for the dredge deck. The first, obviously, is Faithless Looting, as it is just a red Careful Study with Flashback. However, the other might surprise you.... Gravecrawler! Just a 2/1 for B? Sure! There's nothing like a little resilience that doesn't get in the way of speed!
Presenting.... Gravecrawler Dredge!
4x Narcomeba
3x Ichorid
4x Putrid Imp
1x Flame-Kin Zealot
4x Gravecrawler
4x Golgari Grave-Troll
4x Stinkweed Imp
4x Golgari Thug
4x Faithless Looting
4x Careful Study
4x Cabal Therapy
4x Bridge from Below
2x Dread Return
4x Cephalid Coliseum
4x City of Brass
2x Scalding Tarn
2x Underground Sea
2x Volcanic Island
Sideboard:
4x Firestorm
3x Winds of Change
1x Ichorid
4x Pithing Needle
1x Iona, Shield of Emeria
1x Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
1x Angel of Despair
This is a pretty straightforward dredge deck, but with a few significant changes. I removed the Breakthroughs for the Faithless Lootings so we don't overextend games 2 and 3 without wasting sideboard slots. The other cards I cut from my previous list was the maindeck Firestorms and Street Wraith in lieu of the Gravecrawlers and a 14th land. The one thing I need to do a bit of testing with is the Dual Lands alongside the fetchlands. With 6 slots, there's a few configurations to work with:
2x Scalding Tarn
2x Underground Sea
2x Volcanic Island
or
3x Scalding Tarn
1x Underground Sea
1x Volcanic Island
1x Badlands
or
2x Scalding Tarn
2x Underground Sea
1x Volcanic Island
1x Badlands
These are the 3 main configurations that I'm musing over right now. I really can't decide which is best, because I don't expect many draws off the top, so I want to fetch up the required land as fast as possible. However, with the 3/1/1/1 split, you can very easily dredge away that 1-of land that you REALLY need, and have to go without for the whole game.
I think this deck will be what I pack in legacy as soon as the set is released, barring no other busted cards getting released from Dark Ascension. I always hate facing down a turn 0 Leyline of the Void, but I think with Gravecrawler added to the deck, the awkward ground pounding plan might actually get there!
But that's all I have for today! Until next time, stay classy!

The Werewolves are Bearing Some New Teeth!
Hello Everybody!
So yesterday I was talking about Sorin and how nuts he is, but one thing i didn't spend too much time talking about was the problems that would surface because of his -2 ability. The other planeswalkers up until now that made emblems (not named elspeth) basically caused concessions on the spot because they were so back breaking and hard to beat (though I have been 1 turn away from beating my opponent against both Koth AND Venser's Emblems before. note: I didn't win). However, Sorin's emblem both does not win on the spot, and is very relevant when stacked. WotC recognized this problem, and Aaron Forsythe sent this little nugget out on twitter:
The overall reaction has actually been negative to this card. While most have acknowledged the need for an Emblem token, many have been saying the card looks pretty poor visually. I don't think it looks THAT bad, but it easily could have been better. Andrew said when he went to Anime Boston and had a Koth token made up that was Koth flipping the opponent off. While they obviously would print those tokens, something actually worth looking at would have been nice. Aaron Forsythe also mentioned that there would be Emblem tokens included in the Koth vs Venser Duel Decks.
So if you want to start an argument over the recent power creep of MTG, just compare Thalia to Glowrider. Yeah... -1 mana and we gain first strike? Obviously Thalia is going to be good in the humans deck, but I don't how yet HOW good. The only problem with Thalia is that in Legacy and Modern Ethersworn Canonist is almost always strictly better. The thing that really sucks about this card is that it is REALLY good against Burning Vengeance!
Here's another card that obviously REALLY good, but no one knows quite where yet.... I think with the addition of Gravecrawler a competetive aggressive Zombies deck may emerge, and if so I think Lich with top out the curve and add a huge amount of resiliency. Right now he is preselling at 15, but I expect that will go down to 8-10 shortly before people figure out what to do with him. One thing that's really cool is you can flash in a Snapcaster from your graveyard now! Your opponent think they're all safe when all of a sudden your snapcaster comes in for 3 mana and dissipate comes out, all while you have 0 cards in hand! Also, with Necrotic Ooze, we can have a hyper graveyard recursion deck. The problem here is that hes a little too high cost for aggro, and theres not much besides snapcaster for control (although that is a very good target), so its all a little awkward.
So this is the multicolored DFC that we saw on the token, and as it turns out it isn't legendary, but it sure it sweet! One of the problems with Werewolves is that if you want to force a transform you have to either Moonmist or pass turn while casting no spells and hope your opponent doesn't have an instant. When that happens, the werewolves return to their useless state if your opponent just casts 2 spells in 1 turn. However, Huntmaster has triggers on its flips, so even if it never stays transformed, you still keep on gaining value by developing your board and killing your opponent's weenies. The only thing that sucks about Huntmaster is that its basically an over glorified Moan of the Unhallowed, and that card isn't seeing any play. To say the least, its current $18 pre-order price will never sustain. Feel free to immediately sell any and all you open as quickly as you can. Sure he will be played in the Werewolf deck, but it's going to take a lot for the Werewolf deck to take off.....
Like this:
Yeah! Another 1 drop! I think it's fairly obvious, but Wolfbitten Captive is WAY better than Reckless Waif. Thanks to the Basking Rootwalla pump ability (everyone forgets about the pump, and only remembers the 0 cost madness), you can play an aggressive game without casting spells allowing your deck to transform faster while not completely durdling. At the very least, it's obvious the Werewolf deck with now have access to 8 very good quality 1 drops, which may make it playable all by itself. Consider this opening:
T1 - Wolfbitten Captive
T2 - Transform, attack for 2, Mayor of Avabruck
T3 - Immerwolf, attack for 5
T4 - Moonmist, attack for 11, Incinerate, GG
That's pretty good for an aggro deck I hear! Nevermind if the game goes long and you HAVE to use that Kessig Wolf Run. As everyone who has drafted against Werewolves knows, if the game goes on too long, the Werewolves completely take over the game and winning is futile. I am VERY excited to see if this deck materializes, although I think the thing most holding it back is how the format is going to become overly aggressive as every color and tribe gets new sick beat face cards, and there haven't been many good control cards yet (Sorin, I guess, but he's good everywhere). I will withhold from making decklists until next week, when we should have full set to work with as Werewolves is a deck that's either perfect or terrible, and if we get another Moonmist card than the deck will be amazing!
But that's all I have time for today! Until next time, stay classy!

A Herp A Derp a WHAAAT?!?!
That's basically what I was like at 1:30 am this morning while hanging out in Eric's basement playing a very sour game of Settler's of Catan. It was one of those games that no matter what anyone rolled, no one was making any progress, and it was simply aggravating. Mark had already started randomly giving away all his resources to other players simply to end the game, and I was getting frustrated myself, despite being the only player who had a hope of winning. So I asked Mark to look up what new spoilers were up today, and well..... I went "A Herp A Derp a WHAAAT?!?!" when I saw this:
ARE. YOU. KIDDING. ME??? This guy is STUPIDLY good! A 4 mana planeswalker with a +1 ability that makes 1/1 tokens? Sounds like an Elspeth to me... Has a -2 that can deal bonus damage from nowhere? Kinda like Elspeth... Has an ultimate that's actually relevant? Even better! 2 Colors? Awkward.... 2 Colors that are almost never played together? Really awkward.... However, if Phyrexian Crusader is good enough to make deck solely around him, then Sorin absolutely is good enough! There are simply so many ways this can go! BW tokens with Intangible Virtue and all the token cards coming out? Straight up aggro? Maybe this is better in control and you get to really break some backs with the -6.... What about teaming up with Liliana and Elspeth and Gideon? What if we added Garruk for 8 token making planeswalkers? What if we have a GW deck that just splashes for Sorin and plays Gavony Township? What if...... etc etc etc.
Right now Sorin is already at $55 of SCG, and everyone knows that it's going to drop like a rock, so trade appropriately. Every time a planeswalker gets spoiled, the entire world gets flipped on its head as it seems no one can appropriately analyze them. Obviously Sorin is a mixed package, but it's most obvious connection is to Elspeth, Knight Errant.
- A 4 mana planeswalker that has a +1 ability to put a 1/1 into play. Sorin's is a little better though because the tokens have lifelink and are in a better tribe.
-Then we go to the second ability. Elspeth has a +1 that pumps a creature, and more importantly, gives it evasion. Sorin has a -2 instead of a +1, and while it does give permanent pumps, it does not give evasion.
-Finally we move to the ultimate. Elspeth's is largely irrelivent, however Sorin's is OMFGWTFBBQSAUCE good (yeah, i went there). This makes me think Sorin has been conspiring with Nicol Bolas, as this -6 is like his -2, except it also hits planeswalkers! Even if you have absolutely no use for that planeswalker (Koth, Nissa) you at least destroyed your opponent's planeswalker.... and the next one they were planning on casting. That's incredible! That's completely back breaking!
Obviously Sorin is good, no one is denying that. However, the fact that he costs BW is very awkward as the difference between 2 sets of dual lands and 1 is enormous! I am going to stop talking about him now, but expect some decklists some time this weekend!
It's very obvious because of these cards that WotC wants to make flashback incredibly relevent. However one of these cards is awesome, and one of them sucks.... Guess which is which? Obviously the good one is Secrets of the Dead. Mana is not where the BV deck falls short, so Altar of the Lost is really just a brick in this deck. I don't even think I would play it if I drafted it! However Secrets of the Dead will probably be a 2-of or a 3-of in my White Vengeance deck. By the way, having this card opens up some opportunities for better deck names: Deadly Vengeance? Vengeance of the Dead? Burning Secrets? The Secret Vengeance? Burning the Dead? Cremation.dec? The biggest reason I wouldn't play 4 Secrets of the Dead isn't just because I'm bad at keeping secrets, but more because having 2 in play is very dangerous as you can very easily deck yourself before you realize what even happened! Having 1 just helps the deck turn more into an engine and churn out burn until "Oops! I win!"
This is a very odd card that Aaron Forsythe sent out on twitter, The way this card works, you will never be able to attack with a recurred spirit. As @mtgaaron said on twitter: "You want the tokens to have haste, too? Come on, a séance is for talking to dead people, not attacking with them! Have a nice chat." The most obvious place to put this card in is GWx Birthing Pod, as every card is designed to have ETB abilities anyways, so getting it twice is just nice! Also, cards like Typhoid Rats coming back on your opponent's turn can fog a whole attack step by itself, because your opponent doesn't want to trade a Geist or Hero of Bladehold for an innocuous 1/1. Also, it should go without saying that this is very nice with Titans. Recur Grave Titan, make some dudes, have a nice day! Also, recurring something like Consecrated Sphinx on your opponent's upkeep is just a nice feeling!
And finally, we have this awesome card!
This card is so good! This is EXACTLY the type of card the Werewolf deck needs to gaining any respect. It's not incredible, but it's absolutely a step in the right direction! One important thing to note is that this isn't the legendary double faced RG werewolf that we saw on the DFC token, so there are still some more epic effects to come! Wait, you want a translation? Fine.....
Creature - Wolf
Intimidate
Other Wolf and Werewolf creatures you control get +1/+1.
Werewolf creatures you control that aren't Humans can't transform
2/2
Yeah, that's right! Now we have 2 lords for our Werewolf deck, and we some added resilience to add another roadblock from keeping things nice and sunny (and safe). We obviously need to see that Legend and the other 1-drop to decide if Werewolves is playable, but this card is absolutely a step in the right direction!
That's all I have for today! Until next time, stay classy!

PS. I need to give a major shout-out to mtgo user Evil Dice, aka John. He contacted via email, and we have sent about 20 messages back and forth discussing and tuning various points of my Burning Vengeance deck. Then when I made an MTGO account, he gave me playsets of every common and uncommon I needed for the deck for the low low cost of my blood, sweat, and tears.... and a Furor of the Bitten. I really appreciate all the support I received, and now I have been able to rock the deck in its 95% perfect form (if anyone wants to donate 1 Elesh Norn, 2-3 Phantasmal Images, and 2 Seachrome Coasts you will have a new friend!) in a bunch of online ques. Here's how the list looks right now:
2x Snapcaster Mage
1x Wurmcoil Engine
1x Frost Titan
3x Geistflame
4x Desperate Ravings
1x Feeling of Dread
4x Mana Leak
4x Think Twice
2x Whipflare
2x Timely Reinforcements
2x Forbidden Alchemy
3x Day of Judgement
1x Devil's Play
4x Burning Vengeance
1x Oblivion Ring
4x Sulfur Falls
4x Glacial Fortress
4x Clifftop Retreat
2x Seachrome Coast (online I'm playing 1 plains and 1 island)
2x Shimmering Grotto
3x Island
3x Plains
3x Mountain
Sideboard:
1x Elesh Norn (online playing 1 Whipflare)
3x Phantasmal Image (online playing 2 Mind Control, 1 Timely Reinforcements)
1x Timely Reinforcements
1x Oblivion Ring
2x Dissipate
1x Flashfreeze
4x Delver of Secrets
2x Ancient Grudge
Right after I added the Whipflares, the first 2 decks I was paired against were Tempered Steel decks, but I heard Ancient Grudge is good in that matchup! Obviously there's going to be a ton of changes when DKA comes out (though right now, the only cards worth adding are Ray of Revelation and Secrets of the Dead). But for now, this is looking and has been testing really good!

The Dark is Ascending
Hello Everybody!
Today we have our very first day of spoilers released on the mother ship, and man! I am already really excited to see where this set goes from here! There are so many cards previewed that are incredible (or at least the mechanics are) that I really don't know where to start!
Undying? What an awesome name for the horror mechanic! Oh, and the mechanic itself its awesome too! This already on twitter has been declared on twitter as the green bloodghast, and while you can't go infinite on it (easily) it certainly packs a punch! Graveyard recursion naturally lends itself to combo decks arising, and there's definitely a possibility of comboing the +1/+1 mechanic with the -1/-1 mechanic that was last block. At the very least, this is an easy way to use proliferate aggressively without being an infect deck. This is absolutely an aggressive mechanic, and so once again I think standard will be getting even faster and faster going forwards.
This next card (which is a windmill slam first pick limited bomb) showcases another new Mechanic that is ALSO very combolicious with the previous block, that being getting yourself to <=5 life via Phyrexian Mana and then making all of your cards nuts good. Obviously Tharabran Doomsayer is a slam pick because it's basically the white Bloodline Keeper, but I can actually imagine this card being constructed playable because in combination with a very aggressive deck that leans on Phyrexian Mana to play dudes faster, it can help deliver a sweet final punch. However obviously you don't REALLY want to get yourself down to 5 life because then you auto-lose to a Morbid Brimstone Volley. One application of Fateful Hour that is likely to never work, but could, is in the ANT deck because it wants to burn life, and if there are cool enough combo cards that can offer something new and unique, then we could have some rebuilding to do!
Flashback is once again returning, and this was a card specifically I was hoping they were going to reprint. Now we finally have access to Ancient Grudge AND Ray of Revelation in all the same formats, so now nothing is safe, which is terrifying. Which is exactly what WotC want for this block. Nice! The best part? I have a good feeling my original foil one just really jumped in value! Considering I'm not playing it in Dredge anymore, I think it can go to good use elsewhere...
Can be cast from the graveyard!?!?! You know how to speak my language! I think Gravecaller is probably the best thing black aggro decks could ever ask for! I can't make a decklist right now, but I think MB aggro is about to have it's time to shine! Let me put it this way: go trade from some Phyrexian Obliterators, it's going to get nasty in here! Between Phyrexia and the darkening horror of Innistrad, black is just waiting to bust out and smack some people up, which is nice considering it's barely being played right now! This is definitely a card I plan on leaving the prerelease with 4 of!
This is the new DFC proxy for Dark Ascension. For Innistrad we could learn about Reckless Waif and Garruk, and this time, feast your eyes on Wolfbitten Captive! 8 1 drops is exactly what the Werewolf deck needs, and even if it's just a 1/1 that transforms into a 2/3, no one ever complained about a Kird Ape. However, what more interesting is the Huntmaster of the Fells. Finally we have the Werewolf Legend to join Geist of Saint Traft, Grimgrin, and Olvia Voldaren! I really expect this one to be sweet, so go get your Mayors, the moon is starting to rise! Also interesting to note is a 7 mana colorless DFC. Don't know where that's going.....
And finally, a card that will probably never see constructed play (though a sweet limited bomb) we have a beautifully flavorful card! Resurrect all zombies at the price of all humans?? Yeah, that's what I call ballin! This card by itself goes to show how awesome top down design is, as even the "non playable" cards are still amazing and fun to look at!
That's all I have for today! I am really stoked for Dark Ascension to come out, and I can't even wait for tomorrow's previews to bust down my browser! Spoiler season is here for the next 12 days, and this party is just non-stop fun and brewing! Until next time, Stay Classy!

I Made a MODO!
Hello everybody!
So yesterday I was very frustrated when I was playing on Magic Workstation and was facing no serious competition. Everyone was playing really terrible brews, and I had to explain to half of them that their dissipate doesn't stop them from taking 4 damage from Burning Vengeance. That, and the lack of a stack really made control mirrors confusing. The only advantage it had over MTGO is that is was free. So I simply had to ask myself - am I willing to spend a little more to get significantly better? I decided yes, because it's very possible to go infinite on MTGO, you just have to be good, and that's a challenge I am up for.
So yesterday I downloaded Magic Online and made my account: ThingsILack. I haven't been able to do much with it yet, but I have jammed 2 swiss drafts. I unfortunately went 1-2 in both of them drafting UB and mono Blue. I feel I learned a couple nuggets about drafting already from just those 2 drafts, like how Undead Alchemist really isn't that good unless you completely warp your deck round him. Also, in my second draft, the mono-blue one, I took P1P2, P1P3 Invisible Stalker, but didn't value equipment high enough, most notably passing a Demonmail Hauberk and i even got a 3rd stalker by the end of the draft! Naturally my stalkers didn't so much of anything and my deck durdled too much.
If you don't have it, MTGO is great for if you want to be very serious in your testing because there is a much higher caliber of players there. However, the fact that it is another place that can cost you money needs to be addressed very seriously. Right now I'm just drafting, but I will try to borrow and trade for as much as I can to start jamming games with White Vengeance quickly. Most prices on MTGO are very low (<$9 for a Snapcaster), so that shouldn't be a problem. On the contrary, some other cards are VERY expensive ($25 Elesh Norn, $100 Force of Will), so its essential to pick and choose your battles carefully.
Right now, my plan is to use MTGO to supplement and sharpen my skills for paper magic, especially with drafting. At Toys, we can only ever fire off 4-man drafts, and by now they're too easy. Everyone has a color completely open to them, and there's always 1 color far under drafted, so it's just a game of which color opens better. Memorizing packs becomes too easy as well because there is only half the information to process. Drafting online is great because you get the full 8-man experience, and you can pick your challenge as the best players tend to migrate towards the 8-4s.
That's all I have today! If you're on MTGO, feel free to say hello, my username once again is ThingsILack. Until next time, stay classy!

Have Cards in Hand? I have just the Therapy for that!
Hello Everyone!
I was planning on playing ANT for Legacy this past weekend, but ADB asked to borrow it, so I played Dredge. I can't remember if I went 1-2 or 2-1, but I am certain I lost to Tormod's Crypt + Academy Ruins. Hard. You see, He played the crypt, and played around it as well I could. And when he finally popped it I dropped a dredger, cast Careful Study, whiffed, and then he played Ruins...
Regardless, there was one moment that happened that made me realize that there is a greater barrier of entry to legacy than just $$$. I was against aggro bant game 2 or 3, and I played a Cabal Therapy turn 1. Here, my opponent misplayed really hard without even knowing it, despite putting all his effort into not misplaying - he stopped and thought about it for a moment.
I probably was planning on naming Knight of the Reliquary so I don't get hit by a Bojuka Bog. However, because he took so long to answer I named Force of Will and allow myself to play out my other threats much faster. As it turned out his hand was 3x land, 2x Force of Will, Knight of the Reliquary, Noble Hierarch. I snagged his Forces, and then next turn I was able to get the Knight off flashback, and he couldn't come back.
I think one of the most fascinating thing about Legacy is simply how EVERYTHING matters. Everything down to the land you play on turn 1 has to have serious consideration regarding things like how well your hand can handle a Wasteland. Cards like Cabal Therapy add to the insanity of the format and the complexity of each game! In case you don't know, the way Cabal Therapy works you have to name what card you want to take upon the resolution of the spell before you look at their hand.
Seems like a simple card right? Well lets consider what kind of things can happen... First off, Cabal Therapy can be used in the same way that Thoughtseize can be used; forcing through your own plan, or disrupting your opponent's. Interestingly enough, as more and more magic sets are released and new utility cards are released like Qasali Pridemage, Knight of the Reliquary, and Snapcaster Mage, so taking those cards is like a 2-for-1.
So going back to the example above, my opponent gave me a pretty strong tell as to what he had in his hand. But why is it a tell to think after any spell gets cast? Over the course of the match and my personal experience playing against Brendan, I could tell he had something in his hand. When he doesn't have a counterspell, he tends to never look at his hand, focus on the card on the stack for a second, and then wave it on. Instead he did the opposite on every front, so I knew he had to have at least 1 Force of Will. The best way to counteract this kind of tell is to go through a practiced series of motions whenever any spell is cast in order to better conceal what's in your hand. This is still the case even after your opponent Thoughtseizes you and sees bricks, because they don't know you didn't topdeck it, it happens.
One round I was against TES, and I had one particularly interesting Therapy moment where I knew from a previous Therapy he had a Rite of Flame in hand. So when I cast another Therapy, he responded with a Brainstorm. I figured he had to have put the Rite of Flame on top of his deck, so I went ahead and named the next worst card for me: Infernal Tutor. As it turned out, he had just 2 Rite of Flame in hand and Infernal Tutor was the next card down, and after that was LED. So from his side of the table he was planning on losing the Rites and then winning via LED - Tutor -> Ad Nauseum. As it stood though, he next leveled me and won handily.
So those were 2 examples of interacting with Therapy - counterspells and Brainstorm. Now, let's mix up the pot a little and say you have 2 or 3 Therapies in the hand/yard and you can cast them all. Now how does this change things? Assuming you're against a blue deck, I would start by naming Brainstorm, and then tear apart their hand from there. If you instead take something like Force of Will, he can respond to the second with a Brainstorm and hide what he thinks you would take. However, what if you take Brainstorm, and he just forces the next Therapy you play (if you only have 2)?
Casting Therapy the turn before you combo off is obviously ideal for forcing through your own plan because you can just name Force of Will followed by any other counters he has and just ride it to victory from there. That's easy Therapying, so how do we go about slowing down our opponent? Well now we have opened a whole new can of worms! Honestly, the best thing to do before playing a Therapy deck at a tournament is simply learn about basically every deck you can possibly play against. Yeah, I know it sounds like a lot of work.... and it is. However, if you want to make your opponent discard 3 cards of your choice for your 1 mana, then you should put the time in. Even if you don't know every decklist, which is simply impossible, you need to learn interactions, and popular card combos and choices. For example, if your opponent casts a turn 2 Grim Monolith off of 2 islands, what would you name? I would go ahead and name Hive Mind, because the Monolith accelerates him up to 6 on turn 3, which is Hive Mind mana. But what if that same monolith is played off of an Ancient Tomb turn 1 with no follow-up plays? I would imagine they're playing a MUD deck, and some card choices could include Trinisphere, Chalice of the Void, and Lodestone Golem. I would probably name Lodestone Golem here, because he clearly doesn't have a Trinisphere or Chalice since he passed turn.
Cabal Therapy is a VERY challenging card both to play with and against. To win with/despite it, severe tight play is required. It's cards like this that make legacy awesome and help segregate the best players from the mediocre ones. I'm not calling myself the best player... I'm very far from it! But being able to master cards like this one will forever pay you dividends across all formats, as it makes your mind harder to read, and helps you focus on your opponent's cues more.

Oh hey, check that out! It's the foil set of Cabal Therapy I got 2 weeks ago! =D
